Data journalism student Melissa Avelino dos Santos began a summer internship at Paulsen last month. Her role will focus primarily on public relations, with general exposure to other areas of the marketing and communications agency.

An international student from Brazil, Melissa will begin her senior year at Augustana University this fall. She enrolled at Augustana as a freshman with a government major, but she soon found her niche in the area of data journalism. "I like storytelling," she said. "The graphs and charts we develop help tell stories and explain concepts. Plus, I really like the research side of things."

Melissa stands out as a trailblazer of sorts, becoming the first student to declare a major in the newly formed data journalism program at Augustana.

“Melissa dove in on Day 1, and she is already contributing important research and analysis on energy development in the Midwest,” said Paulsen Director of Public Relations Matt Merritt. “She is curious, enthusiastic and talented, and she has been a great addition to the team.”

Melissa noted that Augustana's student body is composed of many international students — including more than a dozen from her native Brazil. This international focus makes it easier for her to adapt to a new culture and learning environment. To that end, she has tapped into many opportunities available to its students who are studying abroad.

"The international students do a retreat the week before classes begin each year," she said. "Ever since I first heard about Augustana, I've had really good vibes."

In addition to studies and travelling, Melissa enjoys reading, swimming and spending time outdoors. She has taken English classes since she was seven years old; her high school participated in a secondary education partnership with Texas Tech University, allowing her to earn not one but two high school diplomas.

Melissa is excited to be at Paulsen for the summer. "I'm so happy to be here," she said. "The big thing for me is the environment and how people here really care about each other."
