Cultivating One Voice: How We Unified 28 U.S. Ag Sectors into a Trusted Sustainability Message for Europe
The U.S. Sustainability Alliance (USSA) represents the full breadth of American agriculture, fisheries, and forestry—from Alaska wild-caught seafood to California almonds. Their 28 cooperator organizations champion U.S. sustainable production practices in the European Union, where environmental standards shape billions of dollars in trade access.
The Hurdle
American producers lead the world in conservation and innovation. But in the EU, that story wasn't landing. European stakeholders frequently assumed U.S. farming, fisheries and forestry are entirely corporate, heavily industrialized, and disconnected from the land.
The messaging wasn't helping. When USSA cooperators traveled to Europe, they often carried two dozen separate, siloed fact sheets, each telling a different piece of the story. The overarching narrative of American stewardship was getting lost in the noise. Without a harmonized voice, USSA risked losing critical market access to EU buyers and regulators who demand unified sustainability credentials before they'll authorize trade partnerships.
The Strategic Approach
Working closely with the USSA Management Council, we mobilized an intense listening phase. Using our proprietary FOCUS platform, we conducted real-time, anonymous sessions with representatives from all 28 cooperator organizations and EU contractors to understand what messages actually resonate overseas.
The "Aha" Moment: Cooperators frequently leaned on the statistic that "98% of U.S. farms are family-owned." But that number alone actually triggered skepticism in Europe without proper context around farm size and scale. EU buyers needed the emotional truth of "family farm" paired with rock-solid, science-based proof of regulatory compliance. The solution wasn't a rigid corporate script—it was a modular, tiered messaging framework anchored by one unifying truth: Building trust through sustainability.
The Ready to Use Toolbox & Training
We navigated the complexity of diverse commodities and transformed fragmented data into a strategic messaging arsenal. Using the Paulsen Message Map framework, we reviewed every existing fact sheet and built a highly adaptable "Why–Claim–Proof–Outcome" narrative arc.
Harmonization Claim & Proof Matrix: Synthesized hundreds of data points across all 28 cooperators into 8 core, vetted sustainability claims—each backed by verifiable proof points spanning sectors from rice to dairy to wild-caught seafood.
USSA Message Book: A strategic guide that translated technical achievements into compelling narratives tailored for EU regulatory authorities and trade associations. No jargon walls. Just clear, credible stories.
Tactical Implementation Kit: Ready-to-deploy templates including EU buyer email outreach, trade show presentation decks, and social media campaigns highlighting cross-sector sustainability synergies.
